What is CBD?

These days, you’re likely to see advertisements about CBD just about everywhere—even gas stations—but before you make a purchase, I invite you to learn more about this natural substance that continues to gain global popularity.

First, CBD is the widely-recognized acronym given to cannabidiol, a naturally-occurring derivative of the Cannabis sativa plant. Cannabis sativa is a flowering plant in the Cannabaceae family which includes marijuana and hemp varieties.

Both marijuana and hemp plants contain the compounds of CBD and THC.

How Are THC and CBD Different?

Grades of CBD

THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol and is known for its mind-altering (psychoactive) effect, but is also instrumental in relieving pain and anxiety.

THC is the part of the plant that can induce feelings of euphoria, more commonly known as a “high.” CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the plant and is known to have a calming and pain-relieving effect without the high.

While marijuana and hemp plants both contain THC and CBD, the THC content of hemp is much lower (less than 0.3% by dry weight). Besides that, hemp is genetically different from marijuana.

Is There a Difference Between Marijuana and Hemp?

Yes. Although the plants look similar, they are unique and have different uses. In fact, hemp fibers are so strong that they can be used to make paper, packaging and even clothing.

Products that use CBD derived from hemp plants are legal and acceptable for use according to the Agricultural Act of 2018. Your choice of a hemp-derived CBD product can have no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight.

Here’s the bottom line: You won’t get high from using lab-tested, high-quality, hemp-derived CBD products. You will get the pain and anxiety-relieving benefits.
